The County of Elk and the Borough of Ridgway, Pennsylvania, abide by the Federal Fair Housing Act and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. The Fair Housing Act protects people from discrimination when they are renting or buying a home, getting a mortgage, seeking housing assistance, or engaging in other housing-related activities. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of: Race, Color, National Origin, Religion, Sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), Familial Status, and Disability. The Pennsylvania Human Relation Act adds the additional protected classes of age, ancestry and the use of guide or support animals because of blindness, deafness or physical handicap of the user or because the user is a handler or trainer of support or guide animals. If you believe that you have been discriminated against for any of these reasons when in search of housing, you can file a complaint with the Elk County Fair Housing Officer, Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
